hey charles....how come your cop friends say they will save pedestrians by eliminating right turns at red lights. if you have a red light.....then at the same time the pedestrian has a don't walk light... pedestrians get a walk light when the light turns green.... so turning on a red light there should not be a pedestrian to hit unless they are standing in front of your car.....i am not a traffic guy but I can't see how this is going to help.... i think they should save there money and put it towards helping the homeless rather than buying a bunch of signs for no reason....or is this just another money grab by the police
When a car is stopped at a red light, pedestrians cross in front of the car. The usual entitlement drivers in Fredericton, can't be bothered to wait and turn right because they can.
In most cases, drivers aren't even topping first, they drive up to the intersection and turn right, without slowing down or stopping. Ignoring pedestrians that do have the walk light in front of them.
It is actually a good safety rule. But like all driving rules in Fredericton it will just be ignored.
A red light should mean "don't drive", that will save money on signs and pedestrians being mown down by distracted or night time drivers. My problem with this issue is, if the Motor Vehicle Act allows a right turn at a red light the Municipalities have no legal jurisdiction to over-ride the Provincial law - so I guess this is more stealth taxation by the City of Fredericton, much like the parking and other ticket crap.
