Tenants in NB Housing will be allowed to keep their Pets!!!!

Hi Charles:

Pet policy – Moncton

• There will be NO evictions in connection with letters that were recently sent by the Moncton regional office.

• Residents that recently received a letter asking that they find other accommodations for their pets can disregard that letter. It was sent in error.

• It is always preferable to deal with complaints on an individual basis.

• Minister Stultz has instructed that Social Development immediately begin an internal review of what reasons would be considered “medically required” to allow a pet.

• The objective of the review is to ensure the no-pet policy balances the obligation to protect residents from dangerous pets or unhealthy living environments while respecting the important medical benefits a family pet can bring.

• While the review is taking place, the no pet policy will be suspended for current residents. But consideration will be given if concern is raised about pets that pose a danger to the community.

Excuse me, was this all supposed to be a joke? If there ever was an idiotic, stupid, mean-spirited and losing proposition as this for David Alward's government, I've never heard of it before, not even in stand up comedy.

Sue Stultz's comments the other day sounded like she was a robot, being fed words to say, telling people they should report on themselves if the worker didn't notice they had an animal.

This is what she said the other day in an interview with CBC:

“Saying that someone within Social Development or Housing knew about it, well if they knew about it well maybe they should be calling and saying well why aren't you enforcing this because we do have a pet,” Stultz said.

Oh yeah, sure, I'm going to report on myself. I can hardly wait. What's the telephone # Sue? I want to turn myself in right now so I can lose my affordable housing and end up on the street and on drugs from being depressed at being homeless.

Reminds me of the situation many years ago, the late Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa introduced new rules whereby social workers had to check out the bed sheets of single mothers on welfare to make sure they had slept alone - looking for you know what I suppose.

Critics called the social workers "sheet sniffers" or "Bou-Bou Macoutes" in reference to the notorious Haitian secret police which were called "Ton Ton Macoutes".

Well Sue Stultz may not be a "sheet sniffer", but she's sure "sniffing sheet" right now. Bet it smells REEEEAAALLL bad.

Reminds me of Peter Sellers, the Pink Panther, in his famous comedy routine "I want two sheet please". A total comedy routine from beginning to end. Unfortunately, in Sue Stultz's case, it's no joke.

Here's the deal-

Ontario-pets are a human right. You cannot 'discriminate' against pet owners, you cannot evict UNTIL you prove that their pet is a nuisance or danger.

Public housing in ontario doesn't even ASK you if you have a pet.

Manitoba public housing- allows one pet, but charges a $50 fee

Saskatchewan- no 'blanket' ban, although some CITY corporations will ban pets. Others have no such policy.

Alberta-Allows one pet

BC- Allows one pet, in fact many overnight shelters allow pets.

NFLD- allows pets, but some evidence seems to indicate discrimination

Haven't found out about the other three provinces or territories, but it does seem that NB is the only province with such a draconian stance.

This leads into all the problems they have with regulation. Once you allow a 'black market', its pretty hard to control it. By other provinces examples, it doesn't seem to be that difficult for public housing to deal with pets the same way every other landlord does.

I notice the government backtracked pretty quick once people started making OTHER complaints about public housing.

It has been proven that pets and contact with animals calms people and helps mental distress and various conditions. Most pets do not make any noise and are loved by others than their owners. Why not just make a rule that noisy pets are not allowed? It appears you allow rodents without permission or ownership.. sad sorry Government no-hoper people. Sorry - I am gong to paste this in the next article...I am disgusted again that people with next to nothing have all that matters taken away from them.

Charles - It would be great if you would tell us who signed this letter. Was it someone in the government?
And if so, who?

If the pet isn't bothering neighbors in the building, let it stay. If it is, tell the tenant to get rid of it or be evicted. Case closed. So tired of people whining and expecting to be exceptions to the rule. Apartments aren't supposed to have pets so don't bring them in assuming the rules don't apply to you. Get a life! Go out, volunteer, be with friends and family to get your social stimulation - don't make an entire system and building feel like sh*t because you want to keep your godd*amned pet!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excuse me 9.47 - I live in a commercial appartment and the tennants are allowed pets - it is discretionary and obviously pets have to be clean and quiet and then there is no problem.
