22 year old female who was strangled to death by a 17 year old Male at the Saint John Regional Hospital was buried last night!!!

I was just told this sad story.

The woman that was found dead at the Saint John Regional Hospital this week was indeed murdered.

She was a patient on the 4th Floor < Mental Ward >

She had mental issues but she didn't need this.

She was strangled by a 17 year old male < who also had mental issues > with a red belt from a night Coat.

The young offender was arrested and will appear in court shortly.

This is very sad!! Don't they have Proper Security in these Mental ward?

You go there seeking help for mental issues and get strangled to death???

I really feel for the Family and the Government better launch an inquiry as soon as possible!!!!

P.S I just learned that a lady in her 60s was beaten to death 2 years ago at the hospital!!!

What's going on in there??? No Security???

Another question that I'm asking???

What are Women and Men doing in the same Mental Ward???

Shouldn't they be separated???

I did find the tone of the article rather offensive - a few months ago I was the girl's roommate in the Regional's psychiatric ward. Did you need to clarify that although she struggled with her mental health, she didn't deserve to be murdered? No one "needs that," mentally ill or otherwise.
Regarding the security, there's only so much they can do. And of course both genders share the ward, it's no different from any other public hospital ward you'd visit in regard to the rooming. I've heard that she was found outside the ward, which would make the most sense. The unit is small and well-supervised. At the time I was her roommate, she wasn't permitted to leave the ward and so I'm not sure what may have happened.

My guess is the Psychiatric Ward at Saint John Hospital is understaffed, the staff are overworked and probably underpaid compared to other hospitals in Canada.

I am one of that womans best friends from a long time ago, and I have found out every detail of what happened in that hospital from people that worked there. They didn't just strangle Serena, no no. they assualted her before hand. I won't get into the specifics though. Now the RCMP has been very tight lipped with her family about the details, I'm guessing to protect the government, as Saint John Regional Hospital is government funded, and they are most likely trying to avoid a huge law-suit from her family. Now what I also know is the juvenile has been released from custody, and is now residing in the Regional Hospital AGAIN. This brings up many questions, like you have mentioned, where is the security, are they understaffed in this hospital or just lax when it comes to doing their job? Another is yes why aren't the men and women separated? IF they were separated it would bring the chances of sexual assault and murder down slightly don;t you suppose?
