R.C.M.P WORKING FOR SHALE GAS PEOPLE????

Open Letter to To the Minister of the Department of Natural Resources and the Premier of New Brunswick,

We've been very busy lately becoming better informed about shale gas development and going to community meetings. In addition to the dvd Gas Lands, we've been reading and watching video by Dr. Anthony Ingraffia, a Dwight C. Baum Professor of Engineering and Weiss Presidential Teaching Fellow at Cornell University and Dr. Michel C. Boufadel, chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Temple University. We're also hearing plenty from the pro development lobby and have been to DNR and Gas Industry public presentations.

The Markhamville Community Asc. met and all households were unanimous in not wanting gas development in or near Markhamville. However, all this week we have faced the spectre of thumper trucks working the Lisson Settlement Road between Jeffries Corner and Markhamville.

The event turns "We stand on guard for thee" on its head. New Brunswicker's tax dollars are being spent on RCMP chaperones to "protect" the invading army of shale gas workers and their gear. Apparently from the very people in communities across New Brunswick who pay those taxes, and who are outraged over the intended development of shale gas deposits in their neighbourhoods without their electoral consent. Two RCMP patrol cars or two Mounties in a 4x4 have been with the seismic crew all day, every day between Jeffries Corner and Markhamville. When asked who was paying them we were told they were performing normal duties. When asked why we couldn't get the Mounties to come when ATVs are running the roads waking us up in the middle of the night we were told "resources are stretched". Go figure.

This doesn't make sense. You say you want to "do it right" but from what we've studied, shale gas extraction is an on-going experiment. There is absolutely no way to guarantee that any process they use won't poison water, deplete watersheds and industrialize rural New Brunswick. Having the minister of the environment running around boosting shale gas as an environmentally acceptable activity is just sad. This is a "big fix" obsession that undermines the very core of rural communities. You've told us how much we need the revenue, what you aren't telling the people of New Brunswick is what we're trading in exchange for the possibility of relatively short term revenue. Put a price tag on that. Are our lives, the quality of the air and water, the peace of our communities worthless to the NB government?

If this all happens as your government intends, 10 or 20 years down the road we'll be looking at an industrialized rural landscape, that's depleted, wrung dry, and wasted. Do you want to wear that?

I'm willing, happy in fact, to pay my taxes when I know that they are being well spent. I don't want my taxes cut if the money is needed for the things we cherish: good schools, medical care, decent roads, a healthy environment, strong cultural institutions... this can be achieved through other means than selling our natural heritage to petroleum extraction grifters. Everybody promoting shale gas development is in it for the money without decent regard for the inevitable consequences. I haven't been able to find a single community in North America that is happy having the shale gas industry in their midst once they've moved in. Many people in those communities feel desperate, trapped by falling real estate values, bad wells, bad air, overburdened roads and community acrimony. There's no reason to expect we'll be any different.
