I think its great that the mayor was at the parade. A few years ago I never thought that would happen. Craig Leonard was also there supporting the community.

If you really want to be treated the same as everyone else, don't dress up and prance like a freak. This sideshow doesn't help but perpetuate the stereotype. I have some gay friends who say they wouldn't go within 10 miles of this spectacle because it does nothing to help the cause.

Gaydar said...

Now I know where the expression, "That's really gay" comes from. Keep your getups to the bedroom people. The straights don't get awya with playing shock and awe and neither should gays. At least I see no assless chaps this year. That's a blessing.

mikel said...

Fortunately, these people aren't listening to the critics telling them to stay in the closet. But as you will notice, very few getups are really designed to 'shock and awe'. Some are revealing, but no more than you'd see at a beach or even a mall. The guy in the dress, well, he seems to wear that all the time downtown. Most of the other outfits were pretty conservative, a few people wore outfits of colour, but the symbol IS the rainbow. If any of those outfits really 'shocked' you, then you really need to get off the farm every once in a while.
I can just see some people complaining: "Oh Lord, I saw a woman's navel! Lord help us its armageddon...and a man who wasn't wearing jeans or plaid shorts....what IS the world coming to!"

It's ironic that one frequent critic keeps talking here about how government is out to control our lives and take away our freedoms. A FAR bigger threat are the masses and their ideas of norms, where anybody who shows the slightest bit of difference is shunned, attacked, critiqued, or worse. THAT is the attack on freedom that is most profound-and far more successful.
Great to see the Mayor out there apparantly enjoying himself, he's probably figured out that its a lot more fun than being repressed.

when the straight parade ??
oops sorry it against the law to have one since the offend the minorities of the gay communities

Awesome! So pleased to see this. It's getting bigger every year. Great pics Charles! Hope you got that case of beer!

Way to go Mayor Woodside!!!

mikel said...

Since when is it against the law? Go ahead and plan one. "We're not queer, we're here, we have no fashion sense!"

LIFE is a 'straight pride parade', you can't watch a freaking television show or movie without a stupid hetero love plot line getting in your face. Even the Transformers movies keep getting littered up with stupid human love stories when all we want is robots smashing hell out of one another. Even that "Wall-E" movie turned out to be a stupid love story between girl robot and boy robot.

There is certainly no law against such a parade, unless the idea of a straight parade is nothing more than a pretense for gay bashing. Like I said, Mardi Gras is pretty much exactly that, although in most countries now it is 'carnivale'.

But I have a feeling the same people would be complaining about such a parade whether it was gay OR straight.

Oh God what's this world coming to? I believe God made Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve. A lot of problems with the ladies and men in this world. How sick is that, I mean really.

Why would someone pay you off for putting pics on a blog?

It's not illegal, it's that the people, like you, who seem to care about the lack of straight pride parades are also too lazy to bother organizing them. The rest of us really couldn't care less.

Anonymous said...

Charles, seriously why are you banning some comments. Go check out the Pride website. They're having Fairyoke at Boom!. Not a joke. You can't make this stuff up.

Anonymous said...

Brad Woodside and Craig Leonard lost my vote. They've gone from tolerance to full blown endorsement of a health risky lifestyle.

Charles LeBlanc said...

I must have rejected 20 comments on this issue.....

But it's not only this issue...Lately 70% of the comments are rejected....

Sadly...they are lots of IDIOTS reading this Blog!!!

Anonymous said...

Normal people have no debilities to parade. And all media reject posts against this crap, so how could you ever determine the peoples contempt for depravity?

mikel said...

It's usually the same people Charles, however, as the above says, this is a pretty important issue and shows EXACTLY why such a parade is necessary.

In researching the idea of straight parades, there were a number of media articles on the subject which allowed 'thumbs up' and such type comments. While you can't discount the fact that it is mostly miserly geezers who tend to hate everything that fill up media blogs, the majority of votes were definitely on posts that really didn't want such parades to exist at all.

It wasn't enough that you don't have to go to them, that you don't have to see them, but a good lot of people simply don't want others to exercise their rights of free speech.

As the pictures here show, there is certainly no obscenity, the most revealing outfit was a bikini no different than you'd see at a pool or beach. The vast majority of outfits were so conservative you'd think it was a republican convention. Heck, the old guy in the beard dresses like he's going to church.

But its true, and its SCARY, that a lot of people's homophobia goes to 'contempt' for such people, and thats dangerous. The first group that Hitler went after in Germany were NOT jews, they were the gays and exhibitionists of Germany's 'alternative lifestyle' communities, who were treated exactly as the jews were. And in a place like NB, where two gay men were beaten up simply for holding hands, its a pretty serious issue.

When people say things like 'this too will pass', then it often has ominous meanings. The ONLY way that freedom of expression has ever been quashed is through violence. And like I said, the 'norms' of violent people are far more 'fascist' than any government-which as we've seen, encourages exercising such freedoms.

It IS a fine line between criticizing a lifestyle and 'hate speech'. People should go read up on that line before posting, and perhaps their comments wouldn't be censured.

And its really too bad, because so much good could have been accomplished by those who had no problem with the lifestyle, but wanted to do some fashion criticism. THat's what this blog should be all about.

"We're here! We're Queer! Get used to it!"

Normal people are the majority. Not exactly a good idea to antagonize!! And your weirdo liberals, who forced these irregulars on the majority have been destroyed in free votes! And, why the Hitler crap? What do you know about him and that era? Nothing! You in fact, know nothing about history and the emerging of society.

Charles LeBlanc said...

I do have one question for you cowards Jerkface Idiots out there!!!

What is the definition of normal????

I await your answer -

Louise said...

I am sickened to read some of these responses. All I can say to you people (who ask for a straight parade when you get one 364 days a year or those who think we're freaks, etc.) is this: karma is a bitch...you will get yours. Judge not, lest ya be judged.

Hi Charles,
Wonderful coverage of the Pride parade and festival again this year. Amazing how shallow and bigoted people can be when they see something they don't like but also amazing is the support out there for us. I'll certainly buy you that 12 pack of Canadian. Just let me know where and when you would like it.

Bruce

I like how Bruce who claims to want tolerant is ironically intolerant of other opinions. I have to agree with the masses here. This was all about flaunting and trying to shove it down other people's throats. Do whatever you want. I disagree with it, accept not everyone agrees with it but if you don't care neither do I.

mikel said...

Uh, people know LOTS about Hitler and his era-Charles could use some updating:)

But there's a difference between 'defense' and 'antagonizing'. While gay people aren't the majority, the 'majority' of 'normal' people at least don't care, and certainly don't care enough to either post at blogs or get violent-and certainly don't subscribe to the notions that a VERY few 'normal' people have.

Mind you, anybody with that kind of animosity to any peaceful group, no matter how different, is certainly not 'normal'.

I agree that people should know more history, then they'd know just how dangerous 'normal' people can sometimes be, as they found out in that hick town in southern NB. Good for Charles for not giving the really nasty ones a pulpit.

But what I think is REALLY interesting is that its often christian groups (minus the unitarians of course, and maybe United) who are most outspoken against 'liberalism'.

Why that's strange is people should go back and read about the start of the christian religion. The early christian church had to pull a fascist germany at the council of nicea because christians were even more liberal than romans (and man were THEY 'liberal').

Christianity was made up of sects AND sex. They were essentially the looniest of the loons. There were hermits, there was the christian religion of the poles, where christian hermits climbed and lived their entire life at the top of a pole, while their food was roped up to them by followers.

There were of course the communists who believed in free love and like Jesus, hung out with hookers (oh but of course Jesus would never do anything with a hooker, he just liked them for their conversation).

There were the extreme sects like those who believed that in order for people to become christian they had to be shocked out of their conformist ways. They did this by acting bizarrely in public.

Anybody that knows anything about the history of people and the planet knows that God is the freakiest full blown loonie out there. God created every colour, and I think its blasphemous to forsake all of them for the sake of blue jeans and black shirts.

The world and universe is the freakiest place you can possibly imagine, in fact you can't even imagine it, its just too freaky. There should be parades like this every day of the year, God would love it. You think 'he' loves being worshipped by uptight WASPS who sing dirges in church for an hour a week and then spend the rest of the time complaining about everything 'he' ever made?

Charles LeBlanc said...

Who am I to say no to a Canadian case of beers!!!

You can drop it off at Fox Barber on Queen Street and I'll get it!!!1

You're talking Catholicism mikel not Christianity. Go back and do some more research beyond google if you're going to spout stuff off.

Anonymous said...

Well, at least mikel got cristiany right, lol
I'm sorry for people who have to ask what normal is. Its been around , identifying the situations that are within safe range for centuries. Its generally where the non normal head for and try to destroy. Not about to have much luck, since the huge majority still abhor your life "style". Normal people are people who know where the line is drawn, and pass it on, resulting in the majority, thinking like me!.

Seems mikels gene problem(tourrets?) causes him to call his oppostion debaters some awful names! Comical to us normals.

So Charles, why is it okay for Luise to write she's sickened by one side but not okay for the other side to say they're sickened?

mgmckay1963@gmail.com said...

I am not writing this question to be nasty in any way whatsoever. But this I have to ask. Soes the Gay Community want equal rights, or do they want gay rights. There is a difference. I am a person with a Physical disability. I dont expect rights b\based on the fact that I am a disabled person. but because I am a human being and that alone. What is bing conveyed here in the Prid3 parade stuff, is we are gay therefore, we deserve more rights then the rest of society.

Charles LeBlanc said...

Mike...I always believe you were a believer of Peace around the world???

Ohhh......wait!!!!

Not with the Gays or the Muslims!!!!!

:P

Who you gonna call? said...

"we are gay therefore, we deserve more rights then the rest of society."

Is it? Or are you just applying your own biases and prejudices to the situation to see something that isn't there.

I don't know of one right they are demanding that isn't afforded to the rest of society. In fact it seems like in this day and age people are still demanding they get out of view for simply existing. Straight people don't have that problem.

Actually, I was one time on the receiving end of what could only be termed a gay bashing incident. I am neither gay nor was I wearing anything more revealing than a two piece suit.

People need to be aware: Hatred affects all of us, not simply a targeted group. Kudos to Pride and inclusion. We're a richer and a better community for it.

Anonymous said...

Gay radical activists don't want equal rights. They want special rights. Note I say radical activists. Most of the ones pushing an agenda aren't gay at all but bleeding heart left wingers. Proof in the pictures with the left winged NDP and Green Party banners flying.

Anonymous said...

"Actually, I was one time on the receiving end of what could only be termed a gay bashing incident"

So! We make the odd mistake!

Who you gonna call? said...

I want to go back to this comment

"I like how Bruce who claims to want tolerant is ironically intolerant of other opinions."

Is everyone's opinion worth listening to? Do we still give equal time to opponents of inter-racial marriage? Of course we don't, we rightly mock them for their horrible opinions and hope that they just stop talking.

You're on the wrong side of history, and eventually you'll have to stop saying what you're saying, at least in polite company, and the world won't miss your opinion one bit.

Sorry, I'd say enjoy your hatred while it lasts, but I really wish you'd get the hint early and just stop talking now.

Anonymous said...

You're wrong on this slimer. There are plenty of legitimate reasons not to endorse and promote the gay lifstyle. The health risks are higher and those in the gay community need to be aware of that and what to do to protect themselves and others. Kids can be taught about the lifestyle as well but the health risks should also be told to them and not brunshed off as intolerant. Consenting adults can do whatever they wish but there's a reason STDs are higher among homosexuals, particularly gay men. To ignore that might make you tolerant but it also makes you ignorant.

Who you gonna call? said...

Could you define the gay lifestyle for me because I'm not sure I know what you mean when you say that.

I don't think there is a single way of living that would be either uniquely gay, or universal to all gay people.

Anonymous said...

You know 1004. When you ride the Hershey Highway with your boyfriend. When you're doing that, that is gay. Don't know what you and your boyfriend call it that you needed to turn here but once again Charles blog proves to be a source of information for those in the gay community. Good luck with your pride events 1004.

Are you covering Fairyoke tomorrow night Charles. I'd love to see video of that. Songs like Love Hurts, It's Raining Men and Dude Looks like a Lady should be classics.

Who you gonna call? said...

So are you trying to say that anal sex is strictly a gay activity? It's not, by numbers alone more straight people do it than any other group.

So again I ask, describe this lifestyle that is unique or universal to gay people.

Anonymous said...

Two guys going at it like you and your boyfriend do 9:01 is considered gay. Hope that answers your question.

Who you gonna call? said...

I guess you answered the question. I don't really think that one activity can be considered a "lifestyle" but I don't want to be accused of moving the goal post.

Fred said...

Charles, great pictures. The only thing I would suggest is not to stand in the middle of the parade as its coming toward you - the people shouldn't have to lift up there banners to get by you. Maybe try for a differenet vantage point to take your film.

I just came across this now. As a former Frederictonian, I find it exhilarating to see the openness and festive mood and the support from the mayor. You would never see this 40 years ago. We do have a long way to go as a society but we are getting there. I believe we need to get rid of the labels first, gay and straight. Everyone is born bisexual, even those who might be 100% straight, 1% gay. There should not be so much division or discrimination. It makes no sense.

Anonymous said...

Hi. Sorry about the error in my last post. I meant to say no one is 100% gay or straight, and even those who are 99% straight 1% gay, etc...I was having a terrible time finding the % symbol on my iPad and did not realize I skipped a big chunk of text and wrote the wrong material until I read it here. Oops. Very embarrassing. I hate keyboards. They get me flustered to no end. They even change spellings so nothing makes sense. but we could never communicate without computers and temperamental keyboards.
