Kinda torn on this one. I regret the sale and destruction of the woodlot. That's some good wildlife habitat there, not just for beavers. At the same time Superstore and Sobeys definitely need the competition to lower inflated prices.
Too bad they just wouldn't build it elsewhere in Fredericton.

The only thing that has ever stood between Fredericton and New Maryland amalgamating is the woodlot.

You all can quit protesting. Costco is not coming to Fredericton because of the economic downturn and poor sales at their Saint John location.

It seems NB can only support 1 Costco. At the end of the day the free market beats Costco, not the protesters.

Mad Ape, do you have a link to info on the cancellation of building one here? I was actually looking forward to it (paraphrasing Scott - it would be nice to have someone come in and give the finger to our current grocery stores). Plus, providing more opportunities for employment is never a bad thing.

Really, they could open in the former Canadian Tire building on Main Street. Big lot, decent sized building, close to a Tim Hortons. Sure it's not in the "shopping hub" but it would at least keep the protesters happy.

money talk all the rest does not count in this greedy world

Mad Ape I heard the same thing last fall - that the Saint John store is losing money and the Fredericton store is not coming. I've asked a few people but it's mum at this point - but I did hear it from an Engineer - not just word on the street type of gossip. Let's see.

Too bad because I would really have liked to have more shopping choices. I know the environment issue is big also and I feel for the protesters, however, capitalism will always win over environment.

That being said, someone had a sign to KILL BIG BOX, with the way the cost of everything is going, that's the only place I can afford to shop these days - I frequesnt Giant Tiger, Victory and Wal Mart - rarely shop Sobeys and Superstore anymore - way overinflated pricing.

They have a right to their opinion, but it's a shame that they have to use lies to get their point across. The buffer zone is not going to affect the capacity of the wetlands to handle water. It also won't flood the downtown because it drains down to the Wilsey Rd area.

Costco will be here August 18th, 2011...I can't wait!

I really have to laugh out loud @ these people that really in truly do not know what they are talking about .........they show up with their fancy signs for example .... "Kill big box , not beavers " I will have everyone know , there were NEVER any beavers on that site as i know for a fact this is true , cause I did the digging on this site . We didn't kill any animals to do this project , but I will have the "Tree Huggers " know that they put several families in jeopordy with all their protests as the job was put on hold for a full year and I was layed off and forced away from my family to Alberta to supposrt them as there was no work in the fredericton area as i was layed off @ the first of july .....all contractors in the area had all employees required for the season , so I amongst others have no sympathy for "TREE HUGGERS " !! Can't wait for our next tree hugger site !!

It is good to see that the communist party has managed to morph itself into the tree hugging movement.

The only thing funnier than people protesting retail shopping when outfitted in all sorts of retail clothing, wetsuits, canoes and cars.
Is the preisthood saying it is tough on pedophiles, all a bunch of hyprocritical arses.

Look around, is this area short on trees or wetlands???

The only thing in short supply is common sense. Maybe all employers need to put a hiring freeze on UNB students. Who knows they may turn out to be as whacko as the G20 bombers. Hell they probably were there in their disguises.

This site is just plain dumb and useless.

I really love how the people protesting are the people that will end up (after University) with cushy well paying jobs.Costco brings life to a community with non skilled jobs that pay well. I understand the concern for the woodlands, but let's look at the unemployment and underemployment in Fredericton. Hmm welfare or a job that starts at $16 an hour. THAT is not a choice, it's a no brainer.

wow you guys are all idiots!!!!! seriously who cares if they build it... its going to end up as something anyway. There is no point in fighting it! Its better that it is being something useful and not a gas station or something! Seriously though, Get a damb life and screw off with your stupid signs. GIVE IT UP!!!!!!!! thnx and bye bye

UNB's refusal to protect the 80metre buffers is outlined in the following commentary:

'WHEN DID 80 BECOME 30?'
http://unbwoodlot.org/2011/04/13/when-did-80-become-30/#more-346

UNB President Eddy Campbell and the UNB Board of Governors have not yet replied to the letters we hand-delivered on May 14, 2011. We resent the same letters by registered mail last Friday, June 10, 2011. Where is the leadership and accountability of this public institution?
