I couldn't find the actual spending in the Budget, commissions must be under some other department heading. But since this kind of spending seems extraneous, you might as well get clear of the the Department of "Wellness, Culture, and Sport", which blew 2 million dollars.
Wellness Culture and Sport at least engeged people and got them thinking about lifestyle - as far as I'm concerned this is an extra - nice to have but in times of financial restraint, is it necessary? Kinda like when you have to cut your own budget, prime rib is nice, but hamburger will have to do.
It's time this governemtn (or any governemtn facing a financial crisis) look at necessity versus fluff. Bonuses are fluff, commissions are fluff...and really, the whole second language requirements is a waste of dollars - you can translate into the other language (English or French) when necessary but it is not necessary to have EVERY civil servant in EVERY city speak both languauges an d have ALL documents translated - millions wasted.
Alos, what about all these glossy flyers and mailing that get sent out to my mail box and work place - I got a whole package on the flu the other day - sticky pads, posters, brochures - to throw in the recycle bin because I have no use for them in my office (it's small). I would have preferred they sent me a cheque for $200 which is what it probably cost to print that stuff, mail it out etc.
