The importance of being Charles #2

This is a call for working journalists in New Brunswick to get behind Charles LeBlanc, the community news blogger who has been banned from the New Brunswick Legislature and its grounds. The ban, initiated by the legislature’s sergeant-at-arms, was approved by the legislative administration committee, which meets in secret and refuses to release the details of its deliberations.

This morning, I began browsing through the several hundred videos Charles has posted on the web. I came across this one, of Charles interviewing Lieutenant Governor Herménégilde Chiasson on the final day of the Legislature session. He conducts the interview in English and French. It is a respectful and candid interview.

So what’s wrong with this picture? Charles is standing on the outside looking in. He’s not banned from Old Government House events. He’s not banned from City Hall. But he’s banned from the Legislature. Anyone who cares about freedom and free expression needs to get behind Charles and demand that the ban be lifted.

Day in and day out, Charles does great service to his city. For example, last weekend, there was a festival in downtown Fredericton celebrating the cultural diversity in the city. Included in his coverage was this wonderful version of Oh Canada that set the tone for the festival.

During the weekend, Charles posted dozens of photographs and video of the event on his blog. He offered the following commentary:

CULTURAL EXPRESSIONS FESTIVAL 2009 IN FREDERICTON WAS GREAT!!!!
They moved the event inside and it was a darn shame because it didn’t rain.
I decided not to take picture from the front because there were too many kids in the front.
I did manage to take some good shots but it would have been better up front.
Oh well…..
This City is full of immigrants but this blogger has learn something.
I didn’t know there were so many of them and the next time I see an immigrant on the street?
I’ll be thinking of their dance and culture.
This Festival really educated this Blogger and I’m thankful for that.
This Festival must come back next year and for many years to come so people like myself can be educated on their culture.

That pretty much captured the general reaction to the event, which received token coverage in the local newspapers and almost no coverage on the CBC. There were no reporters from the public broadcaster at the event.

On the weekend, he also covered the march of a group of protestors who met the mayor in front of the Legislature to ask for support for those who are being silenced in Iran in the aftermath of the country’s fraudulent general election. Charles captured the event on video.

The irony of this is not lost on Charles.

Here’s what happened to Charles some months ago when he walked onto the grounds of the Legislature to cover a protest. First this:

I don’t blame the Fredericton police force for their handling of this, especially the calm intervention from the deputy chief. The problem is that the police have been given the job of enforcing a ban that is unjust. Charles may be a nuisance in the eyes of some, but in free societies we are allowed to be a nuisance. I can tell you that if I was banned from the Legislature, I would be making a nuisance of myself every day. Check out his youtube channel and you can watch him in action. Among other interviews, there are several with the premier, who Charles interviews on the street, one on one. He has recorded a Christmas message from the premier, in the premier’s office. But he is banned from walking on the grounds of our Legislative Assembly, the people’s house.

So I am calling on journalists to take up this cause. Grant him an honourary membership in the press gallery. Stage a day of protest yourselves during the next sitting of the Legislature. What would happen if journalists refused to attend the Legislature until Charles is allowed to attend the session with them? How quickly would the situation be resolved? This is a wrong that we all have a responsibility to right.

Charles LeBlanc is unconventional, and sometime irritating, but he is one of us.

A lesson that should be taught in all schools . And colleges

Back in September, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a
social studies school teacher at Robinson High School , did something
not to be forgotten.
On the first day of school, with the permission of the school
superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed
all of the desks out of her classroom.

When the first period kids entered the room they discovered that there
were no desks.

'Ms.. Cothren, where're our desks?'

She replied, 'You can't have a desk until you tell me how you earn the
right to sit at a desk.'

They thought, 'Well, maybe it's our grades.'

'No,' she said.

'Maybe it's our behavior.'

She told them, 'No, it's not even your behavior.'

And so, they came and went, the first period, second period, third
period. Still no desks in the classroom.

By early afternoon television news crews had started gathering in
Ms.Cothren's classroom to report about this crazy teacher who had
taken all the desks out of her room.

The final period of the day came and as the puzzled students found
seats on the floor of the deskless classroom, Martha Cothren said,
'Throughout the day
no one has been able to tell me just what he/she has done to earn the
right to sit at the desks that are ordinarily found in this classroom.
Now I am going to tell you.'

At this point, Martha Cothren went over to the door of her classroom
and opened it.

Twenty-seven (27) War Veterans, all in uniforms, walked into that
classroom, each one carrying a school desk. The Vets began placing the
school desks in rows, and then they would walk over and stand
alongside the wall... By the time the last soldier had set the final
desk in place those kids started to understand, perhaps for the first
time in their lives, just how the right to sit at those desks
had been earned..

Martha said, 'You didn't earn the right to sit at these desks. These
heroes did it for you. They placed the desks here for you. Now, it's
up to you to sit in them. It is your responsibility to learn, to be
good students, to be good citizens. They paid the price so that you
could have the freedom to get an education. Don't ever forget it.'

By the way, this is a true story.

Please consider passing this along so others won't forget that the
freedoms we have in this great country were earned by War Veterans.

Body discovered yesterday in a wooded area in the Shenstone, N.B. area has been positively identified as 25-year old Sabrina Patterson!!!

A body discovered yesterday in a wooded area in the Shenstone, N.B. area has been positively identified as 25-year old Sabrina Patterson.

Her body was discovered by a man who was searching the area for the woman who had been missing since October 29. The man then called police who proceeded to secure the area.

An autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause and time of death. Ms. Patterson’s death is being treated by police as a homicide. At this point no charges have been laid.

The RCMP’s Media Relations Officer for New Brunswick, Staff Sergeant Gary Cameron will be available for media interviews on this matter at the Codiac Regional RCMP office at 520 Main Street in Moncton at 3 p.m. on November 7, 2010.

Will Cops continue to lie in Court???

Fredericton Police Force in action last night!!!

It was around 3:00am and there was a fight but they all escape.

An officer asked me if I had a video of the fight but I didn't....

The first week of Fredericton City police officer Const. Stephen Stafford trial was a learning experience for this Blogger!!

I must admit that it was a very interesting week and I believe that I've learned a few things!! < I think so? >

It was no surprised that I was asked to take the stand < twice > but it was a huge eye opener the way T.J. Burke tried to discredit this Blogger.

I just couldn't believe it when he showed the funny pictures of the R.C.M.P. I used on my blog.

I was told by some people who has been watching the court proceedings for years that I stood my own and I did very good.

Now? I questioned the way T.J. Burke handle another witness < myself included >

I was told that it was his job to put holes in the witness credibility.

Now if that's his job? He did it well < I did congratulate the guy last Friday >

If I would have lost it on the stand? Maybe that video would have never seen the likes of day in court?

But I do have some grave concerns of the way Questions were allowed by the Judge.

Lets say that a Police Officer is being beaten up on the street?

Afterwards, a witness would have step forward telling the officers they seen the whole thing.

I presume if a citizen showed up with a video? They would be very happy and maybe give the individual a medal?

But I learned this isn't the case at all!!!

If you witnessed an episode like this and tell the Police?

You will be crucified in court!!!

The defense will go after your credibility!!!

One witness saw the way T.J. Burke went after me so he decided to tell what T.J wanted to hear because he didn't wish to be known in the media.

Scary stuff!!!!

Down the States, our law enforcement are encouraging people to step forward with their stories but they are afraid < can't blame them because they shoot people in the U.S >

People who are good law abiding citizens in this Province shouldn't be crucified because they are doing a good deed.

If this style of questionings the witnesses keeps up in court? New Brunswick will quickly change into a huge danger zone because New Brunswickers will keep their big mouth shut!!!

Another issue is to give a statement to the Police!!!

I always believe this was a good gesture from the citizens?

Mind you, I refused to give a statement to the Fascist members of the R.C.M.P. and thank God that I didn't because it would have been used against me in Court!!!

There's something that's not right here!!!

I believe our Justice system is being Americanized and that's not a good thing!!!

The Stephen Stafford trial will continue on February 14th. I wonder what other surprise will I witness?

Yes...it was a very interesting learning week of our Justice System and I have to say that I wasn't too impressed!!

If you make an old Lady happy? Nothing else really matters does it???

I saw for the first time my favorite two ladies.

Over the years, I always took pictures of these ladies.

They seem to take good pictures together.

I haven't saw them all summer long so I believe they were dead!!!

But there they were a couple of weeks ago sitting on a bench enjoying a good day of Indian Summer!!
