Another reason, probably, why I shop walmart in the States. In fact most things in the States. Just a more honest and courteous people. You can see the fakery in walmarts and other Canada stores so easily it makes one sick. But I do find Canadian tire workers real and helpful. Walmart like zombies, always were. They use the Moonies brainwashing course. Never mind the junk.

I save my hard earned money by shopping at WalMart and I'd say they aren't hurting for business in Fredericton based on the line-ups there. It's all about my moeny and if I can save $30 per week on grocery items and toilitries there, then I will (and they know that) I can't afford to shop at all the "nice" stores so off to Ally's I go.
I guess the moral of the story is that you can't just tell an employer that you are taking vacation, you need to go through the proper channels and get proper permission. Of course, if the guy was on welfare for years, he wouldn't really have any way of knowing that. Perhaps Jobs Unlimited should have been involved a bit more to prevent him from being fired.
This is where the ignorance comes in.
There's no way in the world that the new system of forcing people on welfare to work at low wage.
They would need work or mental Councilors at these workplace.
Don't forget one thing? THose racists members < Gordon Porter > of the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission told the Government that the less fortunate are not human!!!!

Anything you can get at Walmart, I can get cheaper, elsewhere. Paying less money for a bottle of vinegar that is more water, is not cheaper! Or a can of nuts that are lower quality, and the list goes on. Canadian tire has walmart all beat.
Did it occur to him that when you have a job - you're expected to show up for work? I've had quite a few jobs and never was I allowed to tell my boss when I would be there and when I wouldn't. hmmmm. He needs to start his own business, you know be self employed, and then he can set his own hours.
Well all I know is this is the bottom line of what can happen if a person on social assistant is force to work?
It was for part time and he almost lost his check.

i don't blame walmart for firing the guy and it doesn't matter what compant you work for if you want to go on vacation you have to give the proper notice and if you don't then your ass should be canned and i don't feel sorry for the guy, and due to the guy just started the job i think he should have waited for at least a couple months before going on vaction
Unfortunately the law says your employer gets to dictate when you go on vacation, as long as they guarantee the amount you're legally entitled to, or compensate you instead of time off.
If the business shuts down for 2 weeks in April your employer can count those 2 weeks as vacation whether the employees like it or not. Many places don't but some can and do.
An employee isn't even entitled to vacation time unless they work for 12 consecutive months.
The guy didn't say he found anyone to cover his shift and it sounds like he just showed up on days he wasn't needed to make up for a day he was. Not good business practice.
Hopefully lesson learned for next time.
IMHO picking up garbage is as knoble of a job as being a CEO if you do what you are good at and do your best. I was taught from a young age that you work at any job you do your best at it and you are no better than anyone else. I am a "boss" at my workplace but I will pick up a mop and clean the floors as well as attend management meetings. My point is pride in a job well done should count for something - I hate this attitude that "I'm too good to work at WalMart or Sobeys or pick up garbage etc..." if no one did this, who would serve you when you wanted something - every job is respectable and your self respect should be what makes you do a good job. So yes Charles, pick up garbage if it is a paid job and do it well and with a smile and before you know it, you are the head of the pickig up garbage crew.
NB: Everywhere I worked you have to be there a while to "earn" vacation - maybe I have had bad jobs :) Smile, it's contagious.
I honestly don't understand the outrage. Unless you are self-employed, you are not entitled to set your own hours! I can't imagine why anyone would feel entitled to decide on their own vacation, let alone after one week.
And whether they are on welfare or not is completely irrelevant. If you want a waged or salaried job, you have to show up when scheduled!

This guy decides to work, but not full time. Instead he calculates it to the penny how much he can earn without hurting his welfare check.
You say that Wal Mart employs a bunch like this. This means that our welfare system is subsidizing their workforce so they don't have to pay benefits or liveable wages. Thewelfare people take it because they're happy to get extra money as long as their welfare isn't hurt.
I can't run off for a weekend in Maine. Why is that? Oh yeah, I'm too busy working and paying taxes so this guy can have his vacation.

Well if it's only $60 a week then I guess it's not important enough to complain about.
People on wlefare "forced to work" - give me a break. I'm forced to work to pay for my house, car , food, clothes etc. and I'm forced to work so that people on welfare can get their "cheque" and still earn $$$ per week. The more I earn the more I pay in taxes - I'll say it again, welfare should be a temporary measure when/if needed not an income and way of life unless you have no other means of supporting yourself and no ability to do so. You get a cheque for doing nothing yet you feel "meanial" labour is beneath you (and that applies to nayone on wlefare who chooses not to work). Shame on all of yo uwho abuse the system I create by my tax dollars.
I was raised on and lived on social assistance for a very long time. I got a full time job and am now a contributer to society. Hell...I am even a homeowner.

I have seen people on welfare that had to be there. they got into a rough patch and needed welfare to get back on their feet. once they had recovered, they got off welfare.
Am I to understand that this guy has been in a rough patch since his twenties? If he can push carts around for Wal Mart it seems as though he is able to work.
and most of us don't get our jobs through a click. I started at the bottom. Every job I moved to was a little bit better.
Charles its idiotic attitudes like this that made me decide to reduce my business interest and become "Self" employed. I use to have 60 staff at one point and there was always an asshole like this to deal with. Usually they had the labor board with them. Less fortunate seem to be fortunate to do as they please and ridicule those who try and help them. Help Yourself and I will Help you Help Yourself.

I can not understand the lack of compassion. Each and every person is just one illness, one death, one tragedy away from becoming homeless. No one is exempt. I am particularly troubled by the human rights officer who said the less unfortunate were not human. There is a guy who needs to be fired pronto!!! He has no business working at a job that represents the oppressed. That guy is a fraud!!!! I believe his bad karma is going to get him, and he'll fond himself homeless and disabled soon. All snobs have a special place in he'll waiting for them.
