I know you don't like Quebec Charles, but it's not a valid reason to be against this deal.

So by claiming this, if a private company outside Quebec would have made an offer to NB for NB Power, it would have been ok?

Did you know that NB is the only province, accept Quebec and Manitoba (who both have huge reserves of hydro electricity), that do not have a privately-owned energy company? We don't have the hydro (or power) capacity that Quebec has, and we can't compete with them price-wise either. They want access to our transmission lines because we have them plugged in directly to the US and instead of them building their own, they wanted to buy ours. In the end, they're not going to buy them, but they will have better access, in exchange for some money and assets of NB Power. Otherwise, in 5 to 10 years, HQ will build their own transmission lines, completely bypass NB with much cheaper electricity, and will be stuck with aging facilities that will never be able to produce electricity cheap enough to compete with Quebec. We have the upper hand for now, so we should take advantage of it before we become non-players. This is common sense. Well for me at least.

Most people that are for, or at least not outright against this deal, do not speak out because the "against" crowd do not want to hear the other side of the story or have a logical debate.

This deal is not perfect, no deal is, but it's not that bad when look at it. And after the deal is done, life will continue as it always has. The doom-and-gloom scenarios the the "against" crowd have been promoting are nothing short of fantasy. I hate to say it, but is fear-mongering, whether they want to accept it or not.

I will admit that there are some unanswered questions, and hopefully they will be addressed during the legislative procedure.

I would just like to see the "for" crowd have as much say as the "against" crowd in this debate, but it won't happen because the minute you say that you are for the deal, you are deemed a Liberal elitist or H&K operative. And the minute an "against" representative is called a Tory redneck, it's the end of the world.

I'm not saying that everybody that is against this deal is a Tory, but I shouldn't be branded as a Liberal or a PR rep because I'm not against the deal.

Everyone has right to an opinion. Fair is fair.

if the offer was good because the offer with Quebec is no good unless we pay the same prices as they do for power which is very low in compare to our prices...

if no let keep our power company and cuts some bonuses and run efficiently and we will be ahead of the games

A private company did make the offer, and will own it. Its called Brookfield assets management.

Ed has posted this before, its complete hogwash.

First of all, NBPower buys private power ALL the time. It purchases it from the states on the open market (its right in their financials), it purchases it from Irving, it purchases it from Quebec. It purchases its coal and previously its orimulsion from private enterprises.

It also purchases wind power from private companies, and has agreements to purchase more. In fact, this has shown just what a bad idea it is to purchase privately, because by owning the resource, you eliminate the middle man. More than one energy expert has said that NBPower would save money if it would do like PEI and own the wind turbines itself.

There is also legislation which allows new private co-ops to set up anywhere in the province, and there is net metering that lets YOU become a private supplier if you so desire. The problem is that the rules are so strict that it is not feasible-you cant actually make money from it, you can only get tax credits.

Newfoundland's 'private' energy utility is actually owned by the province, Quebec's owns its utilities, so does Manitoba, Ontario, BC and Saskatchewan. In fact, Manitoba's utility also controls its natural gas. I've mentioned before that it would make sense for NB, IF it owned the gas field by Sussex, and set up its own gas lines, NBers could access the dirt cheap gas resources now available.

Also, as people switch to gas, they use less energy, meaning NBPower loses a customer and income. That means higher debt or higher rates, leading to more people switching to gas, leading to more profits for Enbridge, less money in the province. Does that sound smart?

Ed made this exact point months ago but apparantly hasn't bothered to become better informed. If he's so poorly informed, why assume that your right?

And again, this is completely anti democratic-so join the fight to force a referendum on the issue, then you can have that pro and con debate. Right now people are fighting for basic democratic rights, people who support the deal are inadvertantly undermining the entire political system. Imagine trying to tell somebody to vote in an election when the reality is that a person can SAY anything, then do the complete opposite. It makes the whole political system a joke.
