Worksafe NB are protecting the Companies more than workers????

Charles,

I believe Worksafe NB are protecting the Companies more than workers. It seems that every claim that does not meet a specific profile are denied and upon appeal in a lot of instances are granted compensation.

EVERY EMPLOYEE NEEDS TO QUESTION WHY THEY NEED TO SIGN A LEGAL BINDING DOCUMENT. BEFORE SIGNING, EVERY INJURED PERSON SHOULD HAVE THE DOCUMENT EXAMINED BY LEGAL COUNCIL AND IF THAT COUNCIL BELIEVES THE DOCUMENT IS OK, THEN SIGN, IF NOT SAY "NO" AND IF PRESSED HAVE THE LEGAL COUNCIL PURSUE LEGAL REMEDIES.

I too believe the WSNB a body corporate does not always act in the best interest of the injured worker. I believe this is because it affects their bottom line and the rates their best customers (employers).

I also think the Workers Compensation Act should be reformed and employees and employers share in premiums. This would allow labour to truly become partners with WSNB, and the employer's.

PERSONALLY I DISLIKE THE WSNB WHEN IT COMES TO INJURED WORKERS BUT, I DO LIKE THE IMPROVEMENTS THEY HAVE FORCED ON EMPLOYERS IN NB AND THE SOUND CONTRIBUTION THEY HAVE MADE TO A SAFER WORKPLACE.

SOMETIMES AN UNFORTUNATE ACCIDENT IN THE LONG TERM IS A WORKERS BEST FRIEND. As an example: An employee suffers an injury and is provided long term disability (life time)with a WSNB payment of $3,000 a month non taxable. While other employees suffer layoffs and job loss the injured employee enjoys a guaranteed income with (in some cases) very limited pain and mobility issues. And in the end at 65 is given an annuity until they die.

How its done at Quebec Hydro!

Diversity in the workplace
At Hydro-Québec, work teams are composed of people
with different nationalities and cultures. Nonetheless,
I have met with people who have received comments
such as “You’re not a Quebecer, are you?” This points
out the fact that these employees are landed immi-
grants. Some people still consider that skin color, accent
or ethnic origin are a cause for exclusion.
RECoMMENDATioN Hydro-Québec’s Code of
Conduct and Code of Ethics and Rules of Professional
Conduct for Directors, Executives and Controllers of
Hydro-Québec are clear on this subject. No such com-
ments are permitted. The Charter of Human Rights and
Freedoms also states that every citizen has the right to
work freely and without prejudice. I recommend that
people in authority quickly take action when they see
signs of racism or intolerance, thereby creating the har-
mony that is sought in the workplace and in society.

Will be interesting as Acadians become bossed by Quebecers!

People have forgotten Alberta where a man was so fed up he went into the compensation building and held hostages.

It's a very unreported area yet in one year the board hears thousands of cases. They report 'lower accidents' (perhaps because mills have closed), the number of FATALITIES saw a sharp increase in 2008. 12 people DIED while doing their jobs.

Last spring we saw the Graham government make a unilateral 'nomination' for the President of the Appeals Board, a decision that goes against policy. The problem here is that the Board of Directors 'picks' who serves the panel-including the workers.

The 'fund' is set up as a business and is funded by employers, although not ALL employers have to register-so if you work for one of them, TS.

They talk about an 80% satisfaction rate-which means 20% are NOT satisfied, that number doesn't include those in industries that CAN"T register, and we don't know who exactly they asked (half of all claims are not financial claims but just notifications where Worksafe NB doesn't actually 'do' anything for the client). It would be helpful if their yearly report had some notes from those NOT satisfied, but as usual, governments are not big on showcasing their shortfalls.

Each year 2% of those claiming will not be able to return to work AT ALL after their injury. While much bragging is done about how quick and ably people return to work, there is no real analysis of whether at that point they SHOULD return to work.

Having one organization represent both companies and workers is like having a union that is nominated by the owners. And having an appeals president that is 'hand picked' (by the lieutenant governor no less-perhaps charles should stop going to their parties and start asking some tough questions about what they are actually DOING ) is simply bad policy.

While the number of appeals is not substancial, there could be many different reasons for this (if people think its a foregone conclusion). There are only about 100 appeals based on over 10,000 cases, that's not a lot, but its worth pointing out that almost 70% of appeals are accepted-which seems to indicate a problem at the initial panel level.

That's from a quick reading of their yearly report available at worksafenb.ca, as usual it doesn't have a whole lot of good data, but its still important to know. Without hearing from specific people who have had problems there is no way to determine 'who they are protecting'. That's a media problem, but a good way to compare is to ask what a typical case would have cost a company in a lawsuit-thats a good way of knowing what kind of deal they are getting.

charles this is a subject that is completely misunderstood by most as can be seen by your comments, if you knew the hoops they make you jump thru it is setup for the employer

The WSNB financially rapes you and your family. They work totally for large corporations! Injured workers who worked for the large corporation of NB are being treated differently then all other injured workers. Whats fair about that and why are they not being treated the same. INJURED WORKERS NEED HELP!!!

I agree with the comment made about WSNB raping you financially. They try and starve a person out and that isn't right. Why don't someone step in. My husband was thrown off regular comp benefits and given Long Term disability, but who can live on that certainly not someone who is living middle class. It is shameful that they cut that paycheck over 50%and expect you to pay your bills. I am truly discusted also at the fact that we appealed their decision and their decision has taken over 5 months to make, it is now xmas and who is going without, not the people who sat on the board makeing decisions for those injured. I tried every avenue their is, but I am not gonna give up. NO wonder that man in ALberta went in their and took hostages, your nerves get bad after a while. Work safe NB told us that if we could provide proof that our mortgage was behind then they would speed up the appeals process. I am sorry to say to them that I have no proof as I am not behind as I had to sell stuff and work 4 jobs just to make ends meet.
