Given that the provincial Conservatives declared the N-B Power deal
unacceptable less than an hour after the complicated memorandum of
understanding was announced, it's not surprising they had formed an
opinion as to Mike Murphy's motive for resigning at about the same time
as he was telling reporters that he was stepping down to devote more
time to his family and law practice.

Not surprisingly, the Tories claim Murphy is quitting because he simply
can't live with the N-B Power deal. And listen, I've been dazzled by
political sleight of hand enough to know they could turn out to be
right. But so far, there is no evidence to suggest that's the case, and
I think - until there is - I think it's unfair to imply Murphy isn't
telling the truth.

Even a cynic like me can understand the demands placed on politicians -
not to mention the verbal abuse they take from the opposition and
loudmouths like me. Six-and-a-half years of that would be more than
enough for most people. And if you've arrived at that decision, Murphy
is right when he says - in politics - there's never a perfect time to
make that announcement.

But that's not the main reason I believe Murphy. The main reason is that
I can't help thinking...if it were me and I was no unhappy with my party
and its leader that I could see no other alternative than to quit, I
would have no problem saying so. I mean, why wouldn't you? If it's
something you feel that strongly about, why would you go out of your way
to say otherwise as Murphy did? It just doesn't make sense.

We offer air time for your point of view. And remember you can always

Besides Murphy is Irish. And the Irish are bred to only take so much B/S and then the hair starts to stand up. Another definite proof, that we all aren't equal.

Benefit of doubt? Randy are you that naive?

What kind of evidence would Randy need to convince him that this kleptocrat has finally come to his senses about the NB Power sell-off, rather than coming to some kind of revelation about his family?

It's not like anyone cares enough to do a polygraph or any real investigative journalism.

I'm more an idealist than most, but even I had to laugh at that. I'll quote Bob and Doug-"Take off, how convenient!".

The reasons to NOT say you are displeased with your leader are too many to mention. Heck, people cross the floor to the other party without saying a cross word about their leader. Nobody likes a malcontent, and politicians have long memories. I've heard it said that he may want a run at the leadership once Graham is gone, but what liberal would support a returning member who left in black cloud of yelling.

In other words...never burn your bridges, you learn that at a pretty young age.

According to stats canada a lawyer generally makes about $36 dollars an hour. As a minister he'd make around that. Although as a minister there is no end of work that somebody CAN be doing, I think Graham and Keir have proven that in many cases ministers don't even know the basic details of the deals they are flogging.

In other words, in a legislature that over the last six years has only met about six months for real work, its HIGHLY doubtful he'll have more time for his family.

IF he wanted more time with his family he could have just stepped out of cabinet.

He could also wait for three months for the most important vote of this government's reign, let alone eight until the next election.

Would you REALLY assume that after six years the guy suddenly noticed that he missed his family? He just had more than a month off with them, not many lawyers get that luxury.

While I don't like political finger pointing any more than the next guy in this case the tories are simply voicing what I suspect almost EVERYBODY already knows. It's true, there is no 'evidence' but short of tapping his phone and confiscating his email and tailing him, I don't know what 'evidence' can prove somebody is 'lying'. Although technically he's not lying if he says he wants to get back to his law practise and his family. He probably does.

But that an elected official, paid pretty bloody well and with a pension can't wait three months for the most important vote the legislature has seen in decades...wow, that REALLY makes that elected official look pretty bad and gives the whole trade a pretty bad name.

Perhaps they should sign a form before getting into politics "by the way, this may require time away from your family and practise in case you didn't know".

Or more reasonably-the guy is smart enough to know how bad a decision this is and wants to get out before the end of March and he is shunned and hated by a good percentage of the population.

Lies Lies and More Lies said...

when a politician says that he is leaving to spend more time with family, you know it is BS.

They get more time to spend with family than any of us working slobs.

They work what? 150 days per year - tops?

GIVE ME A FREAKIN' BREAK MCKEEN. Your credibility took a big hit on this latest rant.

Mike Murphy makes FAR more than $36 per hour as a lawyer. Before he went into politics he was the highest revenue producing lawyer in the province. His practice was worth in excess of a million a year (gross).

Someone who would give that up to enter public service should be respected even if you didn't agree with all of his decisions.

If you think politicians only work when the house is sitting, then you obviously have no idea what you are talking about Lies, lies and more lies.

Bottom line is Murphy wants to run for the leadership of the party when its defeated in September. If he sticks around he knows he will not get reelected in September and that would blow any chances of him ever getting the extra year and a half he needs for his pension.
I had the pleasure of SERVING this man and can assure you Mike cares about Mike. He would love to do as Frank and leave the law practice for grunts when he is done with the political GAME.
