A reader's Rant!!!!

2366404595_953d6ca6ca

Over the 142 years that this nation has been in existence, we have fought numerous wars and conflicts, including two on the world scale, to ensure that we do not give up the rights and freedoms that we enjoy here and that we can continue to pass these down to future generations.

Even as we speak, we have men and women in uniform overseas who have answered the call to arms, many of whom, as we all know, are paying the supreme sacrifice.

Two of the things of which we can take great pride in this country are our flag and our national anthem, both of which should be given the utmost respect. How do we teach our children this kind of respect if we are to say to them that we are not free to sing O Canada in our schools? What absolute disrespect for all of those who fought and died in this nations battles, and those in present and future conflicts.

How spineless of anyone who would bow to the wishes of a scant few who might be offended, at the cost of giving up the traditions of those of us who love this country. Those who would do this should picture in their mind the ramifications of anyone trying to pull this stunt in the United States of America .

Perhaps if these individuals were to have the opportunity to live under the flag of a country the likes of Nazi Germany or survive in a concentration camp, they would be only too pleased to come back home and sing our national anthem whenever and wherever they want to sing it.

Rest assured, that very flag would be flying right here, right now, had we not put a stop to it.

Bob DeLong,

Fredericton .

It's one thing to identify a person's own sense of patriotism with an anthem, its another to base it on completely false information.

The 'rights' that Canadians now take for granted were NEVER fought for in EITHER world war,and ironically many were taken away when the Afghanistan mission began.

The rights we enjoy now are based on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, set down in 1982. Most of those were already ratified, based down on the United Nations "Universal Declaration of Human Rights", which Canada signed AFTER the second world war.

Just prior to the second world war many people still didn't even have the right to vote. Much of the wealth of the population didn't occur until workers were given the rights to organize, and that wasn't until well after the second world war.

In the first world war, ironically, large sections of the population were simply 'forced' into service. The only rights that existed at that point were property rights, and most canadians didn't have property.

In the second world war its also not true that rights were what soldiers were fighting for. Hitler never gave a second thought about Canada, so its ludicrous to state Canada would be under Nazi rule. The states were heavy trading partners with the germans, right up until the point when they declared war on Russia.

One 'good' thing about Canada is that after the war Churchill immediately wanted to declare war on India, and was hoping for canadian and american troops to do the job. Our PM at the time was the grandson of a famous protestor, and in no uncertain terms told Churchill where to go-and THAT is essentially what helped India get its independance.

Canada had been selling most of the natural materials necessary for Germany's arms buildup, right up to the outbreak of the war. In Canada virtually NO jews gained admittance, one MP famously said "one jew is too many" even though it was well known many were being executed.

As we mentioned before, it is the same kind of 'forced patriotism' that is pushed on children is the same kind of propaganda that we think of as being especially creepy under fascism. It's one thing if children spontaniously decide and desire to sing the anthem, but of course that can be done anytime, even before school. It's interesting that in this whole debate virtually NO children have had a chance to express their wishes. The 'ranter' above assumes that it is their 'freedom' to sing the anthem that is being denied-that's not exactly true, and besides, forcing kids to sing and stand is ALSO denying a freedom.

It's interesting to note that the romans defined 'freedom' as the ability to participate in power. That's essentially 'democracy', yet these kids, and these parents, aren't getting a say EITHER way. So 'rights' and freedoms simply aren't part of the equation.

This is simply a debate about school policy, and shouldn't be dressed up as a story about patriotism or larger questions of national unity.

And since the announcement, I've never heard ANY comment on how to deal with those kids who DON"T want to stand for the anthem. What about THEIR rights?

um, i generally agree that the principal's decision was wrong, but i do wish people would stick to reality. the man did not ban the anthem: there is a huuuge difference between deciding not to organize a collective singalong and banning the song!

Talking about how western 'allied' forces funded Hitler is being a Nazi?

Wow, the double think is strong in you, Anonymous coward - looking forward to many more inane comments from you in the future.

Don't worry, if you run out of stuff to say, just turn on your television and I'm sure you'll come up with something insightful.

The anthem was created by a person, it has changed many times and has the fingerprints of self-interested politicians and lobbyists all over it.

Ditch the God reference, ditch the son's reference and the native land reference. Easily fixed, the we have an anthem for all and no one loses their right to worship,or fight if they so desire.
