FREDERICTON FIRST CLASS OR DUMB ASS?????

Charles,

I was walking on the north side the other day and I saw a new sign for the city which I never noticed before.

It said "Fredericton Smart City" in great big letters and showed a picture of a lightbulb on it.

I suppose the light bulb was supposed to mean "bright
ideas" but it struck me kind of weird - First of all because the light bulb
was very dark (and so was the rest of the huge sign) and because it was one of those old fashioned, incandescent (I had to look that one up in the dictionary) light bulbs.

You know, the round ones with that were invented
more than 100 years ago by Thomas Edison and that are now being replaced everywhere with those squiggley expensive new ones because the old lightbulbs are NOT energy efficient.

Like Duh!

I don't think I'm the only person who passed by that sign and thought
"That's not very smart, that's stupid!" but since nobody said anything
about it I forgot about it until today, that is.

The City should have had a sign like this one.

I walked across the bridge again today and couldn't help but see that same sign, but this time it was different.

There was a big red circle on top of the light bulb in the sign and it had a big red line through it - like the kind you see for "No Smoking".

Now what the heck that is supposed to mean?

I suppose it's to indicate it's not smart to use incandescent light bulbs?

Well, why didn't the person who designed the sign just use one of those squiggley ones in the first place?

That would have been smart!

I talked to a few people about it and I heard that the committee that is
deciding which City is the Smartest City in the world is coming to
Fredericton today!

So could it be that someone at City Hall decided that the
light bulb idea wasn't so smart after all?

I'd like to know who signed off on that one - I bet someone's head is going to roll.

Personally, I think they should have just taken the sign down and nobody would have been wiser... but hey, that would be smart!!

I can hear the jokes already:

"First Class Dumb ASS"

"The City of Fredericton is not the brightest light bulb in the bunch"

And my favourite:

"Lights are on, but nobody's home"

What a joke. It's not even a very good poster. But that's beside the point. I wonder how much it cost to design and put that big poster up on those huge signs??? They must cost thousands of dollars...Any idea???

With the "s" on the end of "smart" I assume they mean it to be in the verb form.

From Encarta, I quote:

Smart:
"...intransitive verb (past and past participle smartĀ·ed, present participle smartĀ·ing, 3rd person present singular smarts)

Definition:

1. cause or have sharp pain: to feel, cause, or be the site of a sharp stinging pain
My hand smarts.

2. be embarrassed: to feel acute embarrassment, shame, or remorse
She still smarted when she remembered his criticism.

3. be punished: to be punished severely".

Oh my god this is getting funnier by the minute. I bet they're "smarting" over that one!!

Speaking of "smarts" you'll never guess what I found on the City of Fredericton Green Matters website. An entire page of people holding the new flourescent light bulbs with the words "How many Frederictonians does it take to change a light bulb?"... too funny. If it wasn't real I'd have to make it up.

I wonder what was the first hint that Charles didn't write that article? Could it have been the word "Charles" at the top of the story? Or was it his skillful command of the English language, grammar and punctuation?

Charles doesn't write every story on the blog. He has "guest" writers all the time so you shouldn't be surprised.

He did take the pictures, however, and demonstrated for all the world to see his "world class" Photoshop skills. I think he should get an award for his outstanding graphic design capabilities - at this point, anything would be better than that stupid incandescent light bulb.

Which leads me to ask: when are they going to take down that sign?? It's downright embarrassing.
